As oasis of color coming next. Most pics wound up in black and white because they looked better that way. At Mexicali, you can be fighting the colored spotlights a bunch and creating confusing pictures. Sometimes, sucking all that color out is the only way around it. Sometimes, it also starts looking cool and retro.

For alumni weekend, I returned to my alma mater and did an hour and a half on the radio. Of course, I also brought my camera with me. =)

I’ve spent a lot of time in parks stalking birds, trying to get a good shot of them in flight. While I’ve had a couple decent ones, I’ve only had one or two I really liked.
Last week, I was at the park taking pictures of my daughter during her soccer class. I only brought my 85mm lens. Sunlight was directly overhead. Shadows were horrible.
And then a gaggle of geese landed at the far end of the field. The kids started screaming. I turned around, they were taking back off again. And, somehow, despite shooting in Manual Mode, carrying a fixed lens, and not having any set-up time whatsoever, I took a pretty good shot of birds in flight. From the point of view of keeping the birds in sharp focus with their wings spread as they flew, I think this is one of my best pictures.

Unfortunately, the background sucked. And. man, do I wish I was shooting at a smaller aperture than f/2.0.
Ah, well. Back to the drawing board….
Was in New York City with the family today. Went to find F.A.O. Schwartz for my daughter. I didn’t realize where it was. Right behind this bad boy:

Sadly, didn’t get to stop in. But I did get to visit the Big Glass Cube, at least. Saw someone out front taking a picture of his girlfriend with his iPad. Geek-tastic!
I shot a band over the weekend. It’s been four months, so I was a little rusty. But it was outdoors at a birthday party as the sun was setting. I had some good light in the first set. Here’s a sample. More will come eventually… This is S.R.O.

Those characters keep showing up in these pictures. It’s very dark in there, but I only pushed the ISO up to 1600 for a 1/50th shutter speed. Why was that? Because I was also recording video, which you want at 1/50th of a second.
Otherwise, I’d have gone for ISO 3200 and gotten the speed faster to get less blur. Everything is a compromise, but with a little Lightroom wizardry, you can make those compromises look pretty decent.

In my previous post, I wondered aloud why I had cut off the golf ball, thinking that maybe a tree blocked my view.
Then I looked a few pictures down in Lightroom and saw a wide shot of the same scene. Yup, there was definitely a tree. And too many tourists. And bad nearly high noon sun. (The time stamp shows 11:48 a.m.)
