Near Misses: Huey Lewis

Welcome to a new feature here at, where I find those pictures that might have been great portfolio-quality shots, save for one problem with them. They’re potentially the most frustrating batch of pictures you’ll ever see as a photographer, because you know you should have had the shot, but instead wound up with trash bin material.

Let’s start with a shot from the Huey Lewis concert:

Huey Lewis smiles

Canon 60D, 70-300mm @ 300mm, f/5.6, 1/160", ISO 3200

I love the expression on Huey Lewis’ face.  It makes the whole picture.  But what’s a miss?  For starters, there’s the mic blocking his face.  You could nit-pick that the silhouette of the lead guitarist passing behind him is problematic.  But, no, that’s not it, either.

The problem with the pictures — the thing that makes it a near miss — is that it’s out of focus.  You might need to click on the picture see it at a larger size, but trust me, the camera picked the wrong focal point here.  It looks like it caught focus on the microphone instead of Lewis’ face, and that’s the thing that destroys the shot for me.

So close. . .
